As part of the New Roads and Street Works Act training, FaCT deliver a 1-day Signing, Lighting and Guarding course

This course is a mix of classroom training and practical demonstration and assessment

There are an operatives course and a supervisors course

This course is one of the mandatory units required to gain your Street Works Operatives or Supervisors Card

Who is the course for?

It is a requirement for those who are required to hold a Streetworks skills card and can also be a stand alone course for those installing temporary traffic controls on low speed roads

Course Duration

This is a 1-day course, either as a stand alone course of part of the full 5-day Street work training

Where

This training is delivered at FaCT training center, however it can be delivered to groups are your venue, with prior approval

£175 per person plus VAT, for groups call the office

Course Content

Operatives Course

Legal Framework: Understanding the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA) and the official Safety at Street Works and Road Works Code of Practice (often referred to as Chapter 8 guidelines).

Distances and Dimensions: Calculating exact measurements for advance warning signs, safety zones, traffic lanes, taper lengths, and pedestrian walkways.

Equipment Setup: Safely erecting, maintaining, and dismantling traffic cones, warning signs, road barriers, and safety guards.

Lighting Requirements: Correctly placing and powering temporary warning lights and hazard lamps during low-visibility or night work.

Traffic Control Operations: Practical use of portable traffic signals, shuttle working, and manual Stop/Go boards.

Site Safety and Surveys: Performing basic on-site risk assessments and accommodating vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists.

Supervisors Course

Legal & Regulatory Framework: Understanding the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) 1991 and the “Safety at Street Works and Road Works: A Code of Practice” (Chapter 8 guidelines).

Site Planning & Measurements: Calculating and defining safety zones, taper lengths, advance warning sign distances, pedestrian walkways, and narrow lane dimensions.

Equipment Selection & Usage: Correctly choosing, positioning, and maintaining traffic cones, warning signs, safety barriers, and road lamps.

Traffic Control Operations: Setting up, testing, operating, and dismantling portable traffic signals, Stop/Go boards, and convoy systems.

Pedestrian & Vulnerable Road User Safety: Implementing safe routing and protection for pedestrians, disabled individuals, and cyclists around active work zones.

Site Maintenance & Risk Assessment: Monitoring dynamic site conditions, handling unexpected hazards, and updating traffic layouts safely.
